Following the successful implementation of the Joint UNESCO/IOC-NWS pilot project, the ICG/CARIBE EWS-X in 2015 recommended the approval of the Tsunami Ready guidelines, and this recommendation was subsequently approved by the IOC General Assembly. The IOC global TOWS Working Group IX (2016) noted the ICG/CARIBE-EWS adoption of the Tsunami Ready guidelines and based on the TOWS WG X (February, 2017) recommendation, the 2017 IOC Assembly instructed ICGs to consider piloting guidelines with a view toward developing harmonized, consistent, global guidelines. In July 2016, the ICG/Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (PTWS) Steering Committee (SC) meeting acknowledged the preparedness potential of the guidelines and requested its Working Group 3 on Disaster Management, Preparedness, and Risk Reduction to investigate the possibility of piloting an experimental Tsunami Ready recognition process. At ICG/PTWS-XXVII (March, 2017), a PTWS Task Team on Tsunami Evacuation Maps, Plans, and Procedures (TEMPP) and Tsunami Ready was established to facilitate the piloting of the CARIBE-EWS guidelines in the Pacific, the Southeast Pacific (SEP) and Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICT). Regional Working Groups also identified Tsunami Ready as a priority activity for the intersessional period. Within the PTWS, Cedeño, Honduras and Ostional, Costa Rica were recognised as Tsunami Ready in 2017 and communities in Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu have also indicated interest. At the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWS-XI0 in April 2017, Member States expressed interest in piloting Tsunami Ready. The Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Center (IOTIC) has led the adaptation of the CARIBE-EWS Tsunami Ready and the piloting is to be initiated. The North-Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and Connected Seas Tsunami Warning System (NEAMTWS) is also considering the adaptation and piloting of the CARIBE-EWS Tsunami Ready guidelines.
