Following the First Global Planning Meeting, held in May, in Denmark, a Southern Ocean Workshop will be convened in February 2020, San Diego (USl).
This event will provide a forum to gather leaders/champions/key stakeholders to further discuss and prioritize the issues identified at the First Global Planning Meeting. Plenary and working groups will facilitate regional, interdisciplinary discussions across sectors to identify concrete deliverables and partnerships to meet the Decade's six societal objectives.
The Southern Ocean Workshop offers a crucial opportunity to co-design mission-oriented research strategies in line with the 2030 Agenda. Indeed, the Southern Ocean has a profound influence on the Earth system, due to its key role in the global circulation of heat, freshwater and nutrients, biochemical and carbon cycles, ocean productivity, and sea-level rise, as well as providing intrinsic value for conservation and management.
