Virtual Ocean Dialogues 2021 Deep Dive: Building the science-technology-innovation interface in the Ocean Decade

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO

UN Agency

The Ocean Decade seeks to create a paradigm shift in the generation of ocean knowledge to inform the development and implementation of solutions to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To achieve its vision of ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’, the Ocean Decade provides the framework to catalyze transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, thereby connecting people and the ocean. The Ocean Decade has the convening power to bring together diverse actors to strengthen the science-innovation interface and stimulate the rapid systemic change required for impactful solutions.

One of the central tenets of the Ocean Decade is to move beyond ‘business as usual’ in ocean science. Technology and innovation have a crucial role to play in both informing research directions and in moving from science to solutions. Technological innovation that is accessible, relevant and scalable is necessary for achieving the vision of the Ocean Decade and, if leveraged in a timely manner, will lead to greater impacts at scale.

This Deep Dive will provide an opportunity for leaders from diverse sectors to discuss their perspectives on marine innovation and technology in the context of the Ocean Decade. What are the key drivers and incentives to investing in innovation and technology as well as impact-driven solutions for sustainable development for the ocean? What are the barriers and necessary conditions to support and accelerate the uptake of innovation and technology in operations/business? What opportunities can arise from public-private partnerships and the convening framework that the Ocean Decade can offer?

The outcomes of the Deep Dive will help inform the Ocean Decade approach to fostering innovation and technology in order to achieve its vision. In particular, the outcomes will be used to inform the priorities of an Ocean Decade Technology and Innovation Working Group that is being established to work throughout the Decade.
