OCEAN RISING: The Quest to Inspire the Public

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO

UN Agency

Join us for motivating talks and breakout discussions on how to inspire the public by engaging popular culture in ocean sciences and storytelling

As we aim to build back better in a post-COVID world, how do we engage people to consider the ocean’s impact on us all? In this workshop, speakers from diverse sectors (arts, media, sports, gaming, etc.) will give short talks before participants join breakout discussions to create a road map on how to reframe the ocean as exciting, relevant and accessible to broad audiences. There will be discussions on innovative ways to communicate ocean science and promote ocean literacy beyond communities already engaged in ocean science and advocacy. A plan of action and recommendations will be developed around how to make the ocean more prominent in these sectors to encourage a connection with the ocean in understandable and inclusive ways.

Speakers: Jyotika Virmani, Alan Gerschenfeld, Dr. Serge Raemaaekers, Tom Kay, Mark Towill, Oliver Steeds, Fernanda Oyarzun, Sandy MacIntyre, Monique Roffey,Stephanie L Smith
