Ocean Festival

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO

UN Agency

The Ocean Festival aims at inspiring visitors to move from knowledge to action by offering a diverse programme. The Ocean Festival is an initiative of the German Ocean Foundation in cooperation with partners from sectors such as business, science and society.

Under the concept “Culture meets Science”, visitors are introduced to perspectives for a sustainable management of our oceans. Through an extensive stage programme, adventure areas, educational stations, art and cultural installations and performances, visitors are invited to embark on a journey into the diverse and unknown underwater world, which - if they are not already there - will transform them into true ocean lovers.

The Ocean Festival is a part of the German Ocean Foundation’s interdisciplinary dialogue to strengthen Germany’s public consciousness of the Sea and to raise awareness in society and politics on the opportunities marine protection may hold for the future. The Ocean Festival’s aim is to draw attention to the special significance of our oceans and the importance of taking action by each citizen themselves.

One key topic of the Ocean Festival will lie on the biological diversity of our oceans, which still has many treasures and unknown experiences to offer. The famous international Ocean Film Tour will make a big public screening. Numerous digital activities shall take place: for example, VR-journeys through spectacular reefs or the fascinating landscape of the Baltic sea.

Furthermore, the topics of marine litter and pollution shall play an important role during the festival. In collaboration with various organisations we will show the effects micro plastics have on small marine organisms and how they may endanger entire biological cycles.
