Following the First Global Planning Meeting, the Southern Ocean Regional Workshop took place in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication of Brazil and UNESCO's IOC.

Throughout the three-day Workshop, participants highlighted the unique characteristics of this region in both its oceanographic environment and significant contribution to the global social-economic development. In addition to reviewing the relevant results of the 1st GPM, each working group deliberated region-specific issues or priorities which should be addressed in order to achieve the six societal outcomes of the Ocean Decade.
